Community Investments

Our Community Investments program provides access to capital for Native American, Native Hawaiian, and First Nations businesses and nonprofits with a goal of promoting long-term self-directed prosperity and economic opportunity in Indigenous communities.

The majority of Tamalpais Trust’s investments are low-cost loans to Native Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) through relationships facilitated by our partnership with Oweesta Corporation. Oweesta offers financial products and development services to Native CDFIs, who in turn offer technical assistance as well as business, personal, home ownership, agricultural, and other loans within their own communities.

Tamalpais Trust’s loans range from $25,000-$1,000,000 and have increased Native economic sovereignty and financial capacity, benefited local economies, and helped cultivate generational wealth. To date we have a 100% repayment rate for all loans that have matured.

Hawaiian Lending & Investments (owned by Homestead CDC)

Hawaii Lending & Investments (HLI) is a mission-driven financial institution supporting Native Hawaiians through accessible lending and investment programs. Established under the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, HLI provides loans and financial resources to help beneficiaries develop homestead lands and achieve economic self-sufficiency. The organization focuses on residential, agricultural, and commercial financing tailored to the unique needs of the Hawaiian community. By fostering sustainable development, HLI empowers Native Hawaiians to build generational wealth and preserve their cultural heritage.

Homestead Community Development Corporation (see also Hawaiian Community Lending)

Founded in 2009, the Homestead CDC nonprofit’s mission is to develop affordable housing and economic opportunities on or near the trust lands of the native Hawaiian people, known as “homesteads” or Hawaiian Home Lands. Focused on affordable rental housing, and on assisting families to purchase and own tiny homes as a starter home or a home addition to support multi-generational households.

Indian Land Capital Company

“Strengthening Native Communities and Cultures through Land Acquisition.” Indian Land Capital Company’s (ILCC) mission is to help Native nations recover, manage and gain jurisdiction over 90 million acres of alienated tribal land; to assist Native nations in consolidating undivided interests in land with fractionated ownership; to eliminate “checkerboarding” (mixed patterns of land ownership and jurisdictions) on Indian reservations; to strengthen tribal communities and sovereignty. ILCC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Indian Land Tenure Foundation.

Mazaska Owecaso Otipl Financial

Founded in 2004, Mazaska Owecaso Otipi Financial (Mazaska) is a Native Community Development Financial Institution that provides housing loans and financial & homebuyer education training. Mazaska serves members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe living on, or in communities adjacent to, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and enrolled members of other federally recognized tribes in South Dakota. Mazaska’s mission is to create safe and affordable housing opportunities on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation by providing loans, training, and financial insight to empower our native people to build assets and create wealth.

Mni Sota Fund

Established in 2011 as Bii Gii Wiin Community Development Loan Fund, Mni Sota Fund has continually worked to support the economic self-determination of Indigenous peoples in Mni Sota Makoce – the Land Where the Water Reflects the Clouds – and known today as Minnesota. Based in the Twin Cities, we support programs focused on small business development, commercial and consumer lending, and financial wellness. Our focus is on the development of holistic wealth-building that encompasses physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional wellness.

Native American Bank

N.A.B. is a one-of-kind institution built on the premise that the best way to deliver banking to the underbanked in Indian Country is to come together and create the nation’s only multi-tribally owned Bank, specializing in the needs and opportunities in Indian Country. Native American Bank (N.A.B.) is dedicated to being an Agent of Change, re-writing how Native Communities access banking services. Founded to create Economic Sovereignty within Indian Country and chartered as a national community development focused bank, N.A.B. is also a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), offering Certificates of Deposit, a variety of business and personal checking, savings, and money market accounts, and business and personal loan products.

NACDC Financial Services was founded in 2010 with support from the Native American Community Development Corporation (NACDC). In its early years, operations were sustained through grants from the CDFI Fund and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. After earning its CDFI certification in 2012, the organization joined a growing network of Native and non-Native CDFIs in the region—most notably the Native-owned financial collaborative comprising Native American Bancorporation (NAB), Native American Bank, N.A. (NABNA), and NACDC itself.

Navajo Power Home

Location: Arizona

Navajo Power Home was established with the vision to bring power to all Navajo homes that are searching for a high-quality, consistent electricity service. Navajo Power Home is a collaboration between Navajo Power, a utility-scale solar developer, and iluméxico, a solar service provider for off-grid households in Mexico and Colombia.

NDN Fund

The work of NDN Fund is done in collaboration with the NDN Collective ecosystem and external partners to source other forms of capital as needed, including grants, equity, tax credits, and loan guarantees. The combination of resources is called “braided capital.” NDN Collective is shifting in how society thinks about economic development. We do so by rooting our lending strategy in Indigenous values: recognizing the interconnectedness of all things and our responsibilities to our homelands and each other.
