Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it important to fund Indigenous-led organizations?
Indigenous-led organizations carry the cultural knowledge, community trust, and decision-making authority to design and lead programs and initiatives that serve priorities shaped according to community needs. Given the breadth and diversity of Indigenous knowledge and governance systems worldwide, organizations closest to and rooted within community structures are best positioned to understand those needs deeply. Direct, relationship-based funding allows these organizations to define their own priorities and timelines, govern their own resources, and lead the work that helps shape their communities’ futures.
Does Tamalpais Trust accept unsolicited grant proposals?
Tamalpais Trust does not accept unsolicited proposals. We cultivate relationships with grant partners and organizations through slow and intentional relationship building. However, if you would like to reach out to us, you can write to us at hello@tamtrust.org. We appreciate your understanding that we may not be able to respond to all inquiries.
Can I make a donation or grant to Tamalpais Trust Fund?
We would be honored. All donations to the Tamalpais Trust Fund of RSF are tax deductible and will directly support Tamalpais Trust’s grant partners. You can contact us at hello@tamtrust.org to arrange your contribution or you can visit RSF’s website to make a credit card donation. Be sure to select “Tamalpais Trust Fund” from the dropdown menu so RSF, which administers our donor advised funds, can direct your donation to us. We appreciate your support of Indigenous-led organizations, networks and initiatives!
How can I get started investing in Native Community Development Financial Institutions (NCDFIs)?
Investing in Native Community Development Financial Institutions (NCDFIs) offers both financial stability and meaningful social impact. NCDFIs combine deep community relationships with strong oversight—including annual U.S. Treasury CDFI Fund certifications—to ensure legal, financial, and impact accountability. Tamalpais Trust’s 100% repayment rate on all Native CDFI loans that have matured to date further demonstrates their reliability.
To help streamline this type of investing for other funders, as well as for the NCDFIs, Oweesta and Tamalpais Trust have developed two programs: Oweesta’s Direct Investment Vehicle, for larger, established NCDFIs, and Oweesta’s Small and Emerging NCDFI investment package for CDFIs with assets under $5M. Please contact Ann Whittemore at Tamalpais Trust or Jamie Olson at Oweesta to learn more about how these programs simplify investing in Native CDFIs.
Can I apply for a community loan or investment?
With our loan period set for an end-date of early 2031, we are no longer making long-term loans. If you are interested in short-term capital, please contact Ann Whittemore.
